Frequently asked questions

Why has my dentist referred me?

This will usually be discussed by your dentist at the time the referral is made. It may be that your dentist feels the treatment you require is best carried out in a specialist practice. They may also feel that you may benefit from the procedure being carried out under sedation. This will all be discussed at your consultation here at the Flagstaff Clinic.

Am I going to be put to sleep for the treatment to be carried out?

We may offer you the option of having a conscious sedation during your procedure to make the whole experience much more comfortable and pleasant. Conscious sedation is a technique which usually involves the use of one more drugs provided intravenously. Patients feel drowsy and relaxed and also experience amnesia. This allows for the rest of the dental treatment to be carried out with additional local anaesthesia without discomfort for the patient and with the patient having little or no memory of the procedure.

How long will I be here at the clinic?

The procedure is usually quick and simple with appointments lasting about 30 minutes, unless discussed otherwise at your consultation. After this you will remain with us for a suitable recovery period which will be determined by our staff members after the treatment. Usually patients are able to go home after a further 30 minutes with a responsible adult, although this time may vary.

Do I need a consultation first?

It is important that a separate consultation appointment is undertaken prior to the actual treatment appointment. This allows us to confirm the treatment needed and undertake any additional x-rays to confirm the diagnosis. We can then discuss your treatment needs and clarify any queries you may have. It also allows us to check your suitability for treatment under sedation if this is indicated, and also complete all the necessary paperwork in relation to the planned treatment.
